Do not eat or drink any thing after 12 midnight before your surgery. Undigested food in the stomach can cause complications and your surgery will be postponed and/or cancelled if you forget to follow this instruction.
Bathe or shower the night before and the morning of the surgery to minimize the chance of infection. Don’t wear make-up for cataract or facial surgery. Please do not wear dark nail polish to appointment.
Refrain from smoking for 1-2 weeks prior to your surgery.
If you suspect that your are pregnant or if you are breast feeding, please notify your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Anesthesia and medications may be harmful to the developing fetus and/or infant.
If you experience any health changes between your most recent visit to your surgeon and the day of surgery, notify you surgeon. Please report even minor changes such as an elevated temperature, cough or congestion.
Bring a case for your eye glasses, sun glasses and/or contact lenses. Contact lenses MUST be removed before surgery.
Ask your surgeon to write out your prescription and have it filled before the day of your surgery.
Leave jewelry & valuables at home. Bring your ID and insurance cards to your appointment if you have not already given a copy to the center.
If your child is having surgery, bring a favorite stuffed animal or security blanket for added reassurance. Children may wear their pajamas (2-piece are the best). Please bring an empty bottle or tippy cup if your child can’t drink from a regular cup. PARENTS MUST REMAIN AT THE CENTER FOR THE ENTIRE TIME DURING THE CHILD IS AT THE CENTER.
Do not take any medication the day of your surgery except heart, blood pressure, and/or seizure medication (these should be taken at 5:00 AM with a sip of water.) Bring inhalers and/or insulin if used. Diabetics need to check with their M.D. as to diabetic medicine adjustments. Please bring a list of all medications you routinely take.
A consent form will be signed before any medication, treatment, or surgery is performed. In the case of minors, the form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Guardianship papers must be with patient.
If you do not speak the English language, you must bring an interpreter with you.
Wear FLAT comfortable slip-on shoes.
Wear COMFORTABLE, loose clothing to accommodate large dressings and/or tender surgery sites. Button down shirts are suggested. During surgery you will wear a gown provided by the center. Remove all jewelry and leave them at home.
Due to the effects of anesthesia or sedation you should wait 24 hours after returning home before:
Arrange for an adult to drive you home. For your safety and protection.
YOU WILL NOT be allowed to drive a motor vehicle or go home alone after surgery. Taxis and buses are NOT acceptable. Please arrange for a responsible adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery. In the case of young children having surgery, it is best to have someone along with the driver to help care for the child on the trip home.
Arrange for care of your children for 24 hours following surgery, as you could feel drowsy for that period of time.
Eat a light diet for the first 24 hours after surgery.
